ARMENIA! is the first major exhibition to explore the remarkable artistic and cultural achievements of the Armenian people in a global context over fourteen centuries—from the fourth century, when the Armenians converted to Christianity in their homeland at the base of Mount Ararat, to the seventeenth century, when Armenian control of global trade routes first brought books printed in Armenian into the region.

Through some 140 objects—including opulent gilded reliquaries, richly illuminated manuscripts, rare textiles, cross stones (khachkars), precious liturgical furnishings, church models, and printed books—the exhibition demonstrates how Armenians developed a unique Christian identity that linked their widespread communities over the years.

East of Byzantium participants will join exhibition curator Helen C. Evans and graduate students from her course “Armenia: Defining a National Identity” for a tour and discussion of the exhibition.

The date of the study day was chosen to allow East of Byzantium participants the opportunity to attend events focused on Armenian cultural heritage happening in the New York City on November 2 and 3. These events include

1. Friday, November 2, 7:00 pm, The Metropolitan Museum of Art: The Sound of Stone, a concert conceived by Kevork Mourad (ticketed)
2. Friday evening, November 2, Zohrab Center: The Glorious House: Armenian Church Architecture and the Rite of Foundation, lecture by Christina Maranci, Arthur H. Dadian and Ara Oztemel Chair of Armenian Art, Tufts University
3. Saturday, November 3, 10:30 AM-5:00 PM, The Metropolitan Museum of Art: Symposium–ARMENIA! (advance registration required)

Reimbursement Details

East of Byzantium will reimburse participants living outside of the New York City area up to $200 to cover the cost of travel expenses. Please note: Participants are responsible for their own travel arrangements.In order to qualify for reimbursement, participants must:

1. Arrive at the Metropolitan Museum of Art by 9:45 AM on November 2. Detailed instructions about where to meet will be emailed to participants.
2. Be present for the entire tour and discussion. Please do not register if you anticipate needing to leave early.
3. Submit receipts for travel and complete a reimbursement form by Monday, November 19. Detailed instructions for submitting reimbursement requests will be emailed to participants.

Participants who fail to meet any of the above requirements will not be eligible for reimbursement.
